Barbecue Across Countries: My BBQ Experience Across Germany, Mauritius, and Canada

I am privileged to have barbecue experience across cultures and continents. I have observed that at different places the barbecue style vary, though the essence of the barbecue remains the same. Here is my barbecue experience from across the three different continents.

Barbecue Style in Germany:

My first real barbecue experience was in Germany. Germans have their own unique barbecue style. Germans like to barbecue every time irrespective of the weather and locations. Come holidays or even at weekends and if they want to do something, that will be the barbecue. I have seen people barbecuing in the harsh winter as well as in the summer.

The second most important thing I saw was they like to use charcoal for their barbecue even if electric barbecue ovens are there. Yes. The barbecue is really a fashion there. At any of the big stores, you can find the barbecue things at a marginal price. I have seen people barbecuing in the parks, in their backyards, college campus, and on camping tours such as Himmelpfort camping.

Next coming to what they like to barbecue. Germans are a big fan of sausages and beer. No barbecue is complete without the sausages. Sometimes, to get more flavor, they even pour beer on the barbecue sausages. Here is a video of my camping trip with my German friends and you can see how they barbecue.

Barbecue Style in Mauritius

If beer and sausages complete a German barbecue then it’s seafood and wine that defines the Mauritian barbecue style. Though I have experienced barbecue that I would term as commercial mostly on the catamaran cruises across islands in Mauritius, one thing is for sure that their barbecue is defined by seafood and wine.

In their barbecue, apart from the bread, they will like to have fish, chicken, prawns, and other kinds of seafood that I could not recognize but I am sure they will be damn tasty like their other foods. So, on each tour, they served the barbecued stuff with a bottle of wine. And that will make your day. Like I had one on Ile Aux Cerfs tour.

Barbecue Style in Canada

I arrived in Canada in the summer and I was hoping to see a lot barbecue in the parks and public places just like I saw in Germany but here, that barbecue fashion is not there. In Canada, people like to barbecue mostly in their backyards with a small group of friends or with their families.

Here, beef, pork, chicken and sausages and even pizza is very famous on the barbecue. As far as the drinks as concerned, I think beer is the most common drink with the barbecue but sometimes, hard drinks also work. Overall, the theme of the barbecue here is fun and get together. While barbecue is more about complementing drinks in Germany and in Mauritius, its more about travel, fun, party, and drinks.
