Mussoorie, hub of schools: A day at a hill station boardings

Mussoorie along with Dehradun has earned the reputation of being “the queen of the hill-stations” and along with that it has also earned a silent admiration of being the hub of the country’s best boarding schools. This inquisitiveness drove me visit a few schools and find out the difference that schools in Mussoorie could offer while most of the schools could not.

Most of the schools’ infrastructure are based upon the wooden platforms and tin shades. Some of the schools from the British era and centuries old schools are still mostly wooden in nature. From their floor to steps to the ceilings.

Most of the believed to be the good schools are located on the peripheral hills of the Mussoorie. They often occupy a whole hill range and sit on top of that surrounded by the tall coniferous trees. Most of the roads and streets with in the school compounds are concrete so that they can survive against the harsh climate of the hills.

Lesser effort is put towards making the campus green. Compounds are naturally green and fresh. Nonetheless, boarding schools in Mussoorie still follow the British architecture for their infrastructure which give them a classy look with wooden hut like designs. However, modern faculties, these days, are made out with the durable modern technologies.

And thus, its easy to see that, unlike schools in cities and plain areas, the boarding schools compounds are compact and sophisticated in nature. Most of the blocks like administrative block, sports blocks, laboratories are just a walk away from each other.

This might not be the case with bigger residential schools of Mussoorie like Woodstock school, St. George’s school or Modern School.

One thing which has always fascinated me from these schools is the dining system. I must say that the food habits at the hills needs to be different than the plain schools and thus the dining habits include more of fat and proteins like eggs, lentils etc. The dining habits of the residential schools in Mussoorie has surely been borrowed by the British culture of dining table etiquette.

The hostels are generally in the form of cottage storey where dormitories belonging to different wings are separated. Kids from the sub-junior wings are taken special care by the hostel lady, with love called as “Didi” means elder sister. When winters are harsh sometimes, the hostel lady take care of the kids in making sure that their living in hygienic.

In winters, sometimes kids are taken classes in the sun. Walking to the dorms of the hostel of these residential schools is same as the walking through the alleys of a wooden palace.

Sports facilities are limited but still these schools produce a lot of good sportsman. Call it to the high competition to be on the field. Now a days bigger schools could afford international size swimming pool and even horse stable and ground which itself in it’s case is remarkable.
