Harishchandragad from Pune

Harishchandragad Fort is located in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra, India. It is approximately 163 km away from Pune city. The distance can be covered by car or bus, and the journey takes around 4-5 hours, depending on traffic.

One can take the following route from Pune to reach Harishchandragad Fort:

  1. Take the Pune-Nashik highway (NH60) and drive towards Sangamner.
  2. From Sangamner, take a right turn towards Rajur.
  3. Drive straight on this road and take the left turn towards Khireshwar.
  4. From Khireshwar, one needs to trek for approximately 6 km to reach the fort.

Alternatively, one can also take a bus from Pune to Ahmednagar and then hire a private vehicle to reach the base village Khireshwar. From there, one needs to trek to reach the fort.

One can take the following route from Mumbai to reach Harishchandragad Fort:

  1. Take the Eastern Express Highway and head towards Thane.
  2. From Thane, take the NH-3 towards Nashik and drive until you reach Igatpuri.
  3. From Igatpuri, take the road towards Ghoti and then proceed towards Khubi Phata.
  4. From Khubi Phata, take the left turn towards Khireshwar.
  5. From Khireshwar, one needs to trek for approximately 6 km to reach the fort.

Reaching Harishchandragad fort

Harishchandragad fort can be reached from two directions: North and South. The base village from the Northern side of the fort is Paachnai and the base village from Southern side is Khireshwar. Just search for these villages on the google map and you can get the respective route map from the Mumbai and Pune.

Last 10 km drive to Paachnai village is through the reserve forest and from there the trekking starts. However, Khireshwar is situated outside the wildlife sanctuary but drive to khireshwar is also scenic and the last part is along the Pimpalgaon Joga dam.

From Khireshwar, the route to Harishchandragad fort trek is also pretty straightforward. There is also a proper trail from Khireshwar village to Harishchandragad fort. Trek distance from Khireshwar village to the fort is around 7 km that means this trail route will take a longer time to trek.

To search the trail from Khireshwar village, type “Khireshwar” in the from and “Harishchandra” on the ‘To’ field. For not to change to the “Walking option”. Else you can also type “Harishchandragad trek rte” in the google search and you will see the trek route.

Trek from Khireshwar village, offers a lot of scenic beauty. For example, you can see the origination of Kalu river. Tolar Khind on the way also offers a great view of the Konkan hills from there. Because these villages are very small, expect not to find anything in the village shops.

If you do not want to drive back or you do not want to spend the night at the peak, you can further trek to the hotel Kokankada. Hotel Kokankada is around 2-3 km from the Harishchandragad for further.
