Raahgiri basically means ‘a day of passengers’ started first in Dwarka and after its wonderful success it has came to Delhi, started from July 2014 and after that it happens every Sunday. It is organized by Delhi police and NDMC and their main motto is to develop healthy habits among people of Delhi and target to encourage more and more people to come out of their homes to pay attention to their health atleast once in a week as healthy habits are part and parcel of daily life.
I heard about Raahgiri last year that such event organized every Sunday in Delhi but it took me whole year to decide to go there because for a night person like me it’s an uphill task to wake up at 5 but finally I gathered all my courage one day and decided to go Raahgiri one day. So next day I made a plan with my friends and wake up at 5 though I slept at 2 that night.
It was a cold morning and even dark, once I thought to cancel the plan but I knew I would be in the soup if I do that. So I left home at 5:30 and then I took the auto to reach the venue and when I reached I was shocked to see Connaught place like this with huge mass of crowd in the early morning. It’s like lot of people I used to see at day time but only difference was that there were no vehicles as all the roads were blocked and no vehicle was allowed to enter.
Then I saw the bicycle booth by ‘Times of India’ to promote cycling habits in Delhiites then we stand for about half an hour to grab our cycles. So remember to take your id’s with you or other option they used to take phones as security and you will get cycles for only half an hour as there are others waiting to grab it. Then I took a cycle ride all over the cp it was so relaxing and it was like I was doing so much exercise after long time and the cold fresh morning air just added the icing on the cake .We even had cycle race though I didn’t win but it was fun after that you feel so light and fresh like you wish to have cycling every day.
Then we took the round and saw there are so many other things to do people are playing badminton, flying saucer, football and doing skateboarding as well. There were many booths doing different activities related to health and many groups from collages performing plays and different organizations are doing promotions for some events. There was one booth by TOI where host was giving some task to the audience and playing Punjabi songs and people were responding enthusiastically, dancing as well. There was another booth where people were doing yoga and in another one doing aerobics all under the guidance of professional trainers but difference was all the activities turned into fun to attract large of people. We went to one booth where ready to go dance floor songs were playing and we actually saw people were doing zumba cheerfully where a trainee was performing on the stage and others were following her, we joined them and did zumba for half an hour it was fun to do healthy exercise with a dose of dance.
The best part was people were really cheerful, happy and enjoying themselves, taking selfies, doing photography and each of them was engaged in an activity one or the another whether it’s a child or an adult there were activities for all there was gymming area, Sports area and even there was a big hoarding where people showing their immense love for Raahgiri. There were also kiosks where you can buy bottle of milk or water in case you get tired. And their motto did change me that day because when I came home I felt very fresh and energetic usually I used to wake up at 10 but that day I finished almost half of my work before 10. It really changed me now I always wake up early and do my daily exercise especially jogging and feel energetic all day.
If you are already a health freak then this event will definitely boost you to do more and something unique and those who aren’t and lazy person like me it will definitely brings you lot of healthy habits because all we need is a little trigger and motivation to start a new thing especially healthy habits.
